In 1998, Antwerp city council decided to develop a new museum in the heart of the old harbour area.  The MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) is located in a district known locally as the “Eilandje” (Little Island). The works took place between 2006 and early 2010.

The museum brings together collections from institutions such as the National Maritime Museum, the “Volkskundemuseum” (Folklore Museum) the “Vleeshuis” (Butchers’ Hall), and the renowned Antwerp collection.

The project is a feat of architectural, conceptual and technical ingenuity. It refers to Antwerp’s warehouses in times gone by; while the roof and the panorama hall offer a fantastic view over Antwerp and its surroundings.

The museum floors are stacked in such a way that they create a sixty-metre spiral tower. The top floor houses the events hall and a Michelin-star restaurant with a view over the river Scheldt.
