Airport Schiphol OneXS project

In 2012, during the preparations for the Schiphol OneXS project (topping E,F,G gates, GH building), Schiphol challenged the market to develop a roofing system that would meet the highest demands for durability and fire safety. FOAMGLAS® insulation with a single layer of mechanically fastened TPO roofing material fulfilled these requirements.
FOAMGLAS® insulation had been known for many years at Schiphol in the execution of the so-called Compact Roof, where all layers are fully adhered. In the OneXS project, the use of open flames was no longer permitted and, in addition, the number of hoisting movements had to be reduced as much as possible. The insulation material had to be completely non-flammable, but also highly pressure-resistant and have a demonstrably long lifespan. The roofing material also had to be extremely durable, chemically resistant and easy to separate for later re-use or recycling.
FOAMGLAS® has taken up the challenge and in dialogue with Schiphol, project partners and market participants, developed a system which completely fulfils the requirements set.
The initial investment is somewhat higher than for traditional roofing and insulation, but Schiphol calculated that due to the high durability, the low maintenance and the long lifetime, the total cost of ownership is very favourable.
Gate A has been designed on the international sustainability label #LEED Gold and will be the most sustainable gate of Schiphol. The sustainability is reflected in the modular design and the use of materials, among other things. The roofs are constructed with FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation and equipped with a heat-repellent and energy-efficient eco-roof membrane with 5000 m2 solar panels.
