A fire sprinkler system is an active fire protection method, consisting of a water supply system, providing adequate pressure and flowrate to a water distribution piping system, onto which fire sprinklers are connected.
The most important components of a sprinkler system are the network of distribution pipes and a water supply.
The sprinklers are spaced according to the fire risk and are located in the branch pipes.
If you have a water pipe sprinkler system, insulating the pipes is an effective way to prevent the water from freezing.
A well-performing insulation system slows heat transfer, helping to keep the water above its freezing point, even if the temperature around the pipes is below freezing.
Uninsulated sprinkler systems are subjected to possible freezing of the system which could lead to blockages in the pipe and possibly cracks or bursts. This would interfere with the water supply to the sprinkler heads and could have severe consequences in case of a fire.
Sprinkler pipes are also subject to moisture which is one of the reasons why the insulation should be impermeable. This helps prevent entrance of water or condensation into the insulation which could result in corrosion related issues and high operational costs.
Typical configuration
for sprinkler pipes:
- A single layer system of FOAMGLAS® insulation is generally sufficient for this temperature range.
- Joints shall be sealed with a PITTSEAL® sealant appropriate for the application.
- Coating, jacketing or cladding shall be applied for aesthetics or where mechanical protection is required.
