Fire wall penetrations

Wall penetration with fire

Thermal insulation solutions that prevent the spread of fire to other parts of a building or structure. Our fire wall penetration systems will prevent the immediate spread of fire and toxic fumes through multiple rooms while limiting the heat release from the fire. This will serve to protect piping and equipment from fire damage and help safeguard personnel.

Modern buildings are equipped with various services that travel throughout the facility. Electric cabling and plumbing pipes are few of the items that pass through walls.

When a service passes through a rated wall, penetration firestop systems are installed to ensure the fire rating of the wall is maintained.

Through-wall penetration systems are passive fire protective systems that are mainly used to compartmentalize a fire and to help keep it from spreading for a long enough period so that the building can be evacuated.

Certain insulation materials are inherently combustible and can contribute to the intensity of fires. Other insulation materials may be noncombustible, but they may produce toxic smoke.

In commercial and institutional buildings, fire and smoke spread are key issues. The insulation material that should be specified where fire and smoke are possible should be fire-safe and provide fire protection for the insulated structures and equipment.

The insulation material will also minimize the heat transfer to the protected structure, which helps to minimize damage resulting from an external fire.

FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation will not add fuel to the fire and will not produce toxic fumes.

Cellular glass insulation has been widely tested and is acceptable to use in multiple penetration fire stop systems including various wall and floor materials and the use of several fire stop sealants.

  • a layer of FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation shall be dry applied
  • joints shall be sealed with a PITTSEAL® sealant appropriate for the application
  • PC® Jacketing or cladding finish where required
