Liquid gases piping and equipment

Thermal insulation solutions for liquid gas piping and equipment operating at cryogenic temperatures.
Many facilities in the processing industry have several processes that include liquified gases such as ethane, butane, etc. These are transported throughout a network of pipelines before they enter the processes where they are required.
These liquified gas pipelines operate at very low temperatures, which presents a risk for the formation of condensation when exposed to ambient air. The insulation system is what keeps the difference in temperature between the pipe and its surroundings to a minimum to limit condensation.
It’s important to choose a closed-cell insulation system with a high water vapor diffusion resistance to help prevent moisture from penetrating the system - which could lead to corrosion-related issues.
A lack of insulation efficiency can cause severe problems with process control and interfere with both the quality and quantity of the manufactured product. Examples include excessive boil-off or product loss, shut-down of chemical processes, interruption of fluid flow.
A well-performing insulation material helps in creating an efficient system that will maintain its thermal properties for years, greatly reducing long-term energy consumption.
Liquified gases are also highly flammable, which is why it is very important to have a reliable insulation system in place that can help prevent possible leakages. Leakages can also lead to corrosion related issues, posing additional dangers.
Typical Configuration
for Service Temperatures from -50°C to -180°C (-58°F to -292°F):
- A double layer system of prefabricated shells (PSH), segments (PSG) and shapes is generally sufficient for this temperature range.
- The insulation layers shall be designed / manufactured so that the interface temperature of the two layers is not lower than 50°C (-58°F).
- System shall be applied with staggered joints.
- Outer layer joints shall be sealed with a PITTSEAL® sealant appropriate for this application.
