EDP is a company that values sustainability and low energy. Their new headquarters in Bilbao has a LEED PLATINUM certificate, a record in Spain. The FOAMGLAS® compact green roof adds to this energy efficiency and offers extra security thanks to its water resistant properties. It also allows natural light in, saving further energy.

This building was completed in 1926 under the direction of architects Tomás Bilbao and Hilario Imaz. The Pharmaceutical Center had its headquarters here, being the store and the laboratory. In 2013 the company EDP moved to its new headquarters here. The most important details of this building are the signs : “Pharmaceutical Center of Biscay” on one side and “Offices, Laboratory and Warehouse” on the other.

The major feature of the rehabilitation project is the implementation of the energy standard LEED (U.S. Green Building Council) that makes the new headquarters in Bilbao of EDP an example of energy efficiency. The building has a LEED PLATINUM certificate with a score of 83 points out of 110, which is, by far, a record in Spain and at the time the first office building in the category to reach this certification.

One of the factors determining the use of FOAMGLAS® has been the efficiency of the «heat island» compact garden roof and its recycled origin . The internal glass atrium shaped like an inverted pyramid that houses inside the building and a clear structure of each plant allows natural light in the offices, with the consequent energy savings.
