Low temperature tank wall and roof

White gas storage tanks

Thermal insulation tank wall and roof solutions for tanks operating at below ambient temperatures. Our tank wall and roof systems will limit heat transfer and provide moisture and corrosion resistance so that process control is assured.

Tanks with operating temperatures not lower than approximately -50°C (-58°F) are often called cold or below ambient storage tanks, these can contain products like butane, propane, ammonia, propylene, etc.

Tanks can vary in design and equipment, the type of construction and the storage temperature often depends on the properties of the products that are going to be stored in them.  With such a broad variety of chemicals, a detailed assessment is necessary to ensure that all aspects are taken into consideration to ensure that a product can be stored and handled in a safe and efficient manner.

With tanks operating at this temperature, a primary requirement is limiting the heat transfer or boil-off rate that negatively impact the operating cost of a terminal. Installing a tank wall and roof insulation system helps your tank store its content as efficiently as possible.

The difference in temperature between the cold content of the tank and the outside ambient temperature can cause a high amount of surface condensation. This could lead to major issues of corrosion and non-performing insulation, which could pose a problem to the mechanical strength of your tank.

These risks can be limited by choosing an insulation material with a completely closed cell structure. FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation is impervious to water and water vapor.

The closed cell structure also helps prevent absorption of flammable liquids or chemicals should a spill or leakage occur.

The tank walls of the tanks operating at temperatures not lower than -50°C (-58°F) are generally insulated with a single or multi-layer adhered system.

Typical designs could consist of:

  • A single wall tank without further protection. The wall insulation is directly installed on the outside face of the tank.
  • A single wall tank with a bund wall built 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 ft) from the tank. The wall insulation is installed on the outer face of the tank.
  • A double containment tank in which the inner steel tank is completely surrounded - base, wall and roof - by an exterior concrete tank.

In this case the insulation system can be adhered on the outside face of the inside steel tank or on the inside face of the outside tank (the liner).

  • a possible anti-corrosion layer on the surface to be insulated
  • one or several layers of FOAMGLAS® cellular glass adhered with PC® adhesive, the joints being filled with the same product
  • depending on the situation, a fabric reinforced coating or a metal jacket with necessary straps to keep it in place
