Fresh water tanks are operated by the regional water works facility and have the task of ensuring the permanent supply of drinking water to people living in a certain area.
Since the water supply is subject to constant - especially seasonal - fluctuations, a balance between water inflow and consumption must be created so that the peak consumption can be covered. This balance is achieved by water tanks that are connected to widely branched water channel and water piping systems.
The functions of water tanks differ according to their location within a water supply network. Water tanks located on higher altitudes determine and limit the pressure in their supply area and increase the security of supply, while those in lower altitudes store the required quantities of water. The main function of thermal insulation inside water reservoirs is to prevent condensation under its concrete roof. Excessive condensation can lead to an impairment of the water quality.
The durable FOAMGLAS® insulation system is the preeminent solution for this kind of applications because its impermeable nature prevents condensation and thereby precludes the possibility of corrosion, structural damage to the concrete, fungus and the development of other germs that could contribute to the contamination of the drinking water.
FOAMGLAS® insulation does not deteriorate with age, ensuring that the insulation values remain constant during the entire life span of the water reservoir.
Being in inorganic material, it is resistant to infestation by rodents, microorganisms and the penetration of roots and humic acids. This means it will prevent any contamination of the drinking water by keeping out all unwanted organisms throughout the lifetime of the tank.
Typical configuration
for fresh water storage tanks:
- A single layer system of FOAMGLAS® insulation is generally sufficient for this temperature range
- A PC® Adhesive or hot bitumen is used to adhere the blocks to the concrete substrate
- Finished with a bituminous roofing membrane
